My featured pose this month is traditionally called Extended Triangle Pose with the sanskirt name Utthita Trikonansana. This is one of the first poses any yoga student will learn because it increases the strength and flexibilityof your legs and lower joints yet allows ways to stretch your hamstrings fairly safe. Triangle pose is also the first step any student will take to learn inversions, twists and backbends.
Pose benefits:
- Increases strength and flexibility in the legs, ankles, knees and hips
- Stretches the hips, groin, hamstrings, and calves
- Opens the shoulders and chest, extends the spine
- Improves digestion
- Relieves lower back pain and stiff neck
Contraindications:
- Knee pain
- Neck problems
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Uncontrolled low blood pressure
- Heart conditions
